3D printing workshop

11:12:27 ModeEngage | As a marketing bullet point: I'd love to see 3d printer classes. │
11:12:41 ModeEngage | I'm highly interested in 3d printing, but have absolutely no idea where to start. │
11:13:49 ModeEngage | I'm sure there are lots of logistical issues with that, what with printers being expensive and such.

Consider this done. We will put together a workshop very soon.

I'm not familiar with the PrinterBot specifically, but I'm very competent with 3D modeling and mesh cleanup to be used with 3D printing. I'd be happy to help put together some material for a workshop or tutorial.

That would be great since I'm just getting my feet wet with 3D modeling. I was able to produce a fairly large Christmas ornament with a moving part but now I'm just trying to make a simple "Lowell Makes" coin and can't seem to find out why it's complaining about manifolds.

What software are you using? I might be able to help troubleshoot.

You're going to cringe...

I have a lot of respect for those who can use Blender, but I am not one of them.

If you are feeling up to some experimentation, I'd suggest looking at Design Spark, which is really a free re-branded version of SpaceClaim, which is itself a full 3D direct modeller. The best part about Design Spark is that it is free and still lets you output STLs or OBJs, which should be all you need for most 3D printers. The modelling tools are great (I'm a little biased; I worked at SpaceClaim for 3 years).

If you're curious, you can download Design Spark here:

For a fairly dated blog post I wrote back when I worked there, demonstrating a bit of the software, check this out:

PS: I assure you I'm not trying to sell anyone on any software. It's just that this is still the software I use for 3D printing projects; it's faster to learn and use than SolidWorks.

I only run linux. There's only a Windows version of Design Spark

Ah, well then that won't work. Oh well.

I've been using sketchup. Not great for drawing, but free and can do the right format for Shapeways.

One big help has been a plugin that shows you where errors are (That manifold thing), not only is it bad to have holes between inside and outside, but leftover lines and duplicate lines also confuse even the commercial grade printers.

The plugin I found through the forums for sketchup is called "solid inspector". Also free and to me impressive because the guy who wrote it did it in some spare time. (I haven't programmed since..........Lets just say the 386 was new but I didn't do anything on either those or the 80286)

Steve, I'm always amazed by what people can do in Sketchup. Personally, I've never had any success with it, at least in any detailed design respect.

Nice to know there are others here who are familiar with Shapeways. I've had nothing but positive experiences with them in the past. They are also a pretty decent resource for printing tutorials. The two programs they mention in are quite useful.
